OAKLAND — A Hayward gang member has accepted a 23-year prison sentence for three counts of attempted murder, ending a prosecution that has been ongoing for eight years, court records show.

Humberto Villegas, 32, became the last man to be convicted in Operation Winter Storm, a 2017 wiretap case that took aim at a gang called East Las Palmas, a subset of the Norteños based in South Hayward. Villegas’ five co-defendants all received sentences ranging from seven years in prison to 25 years to life, court records show.

Villegas pleaded no contest to three attempted murder counts, and was formally sentenced in late August, records show. He received credit for nearly 10 years spent behind bars while the case was pending. He was transferred to prison on Sept. 18 and is being housed at Pleasant V
