WASHINGTON — A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to end its deployment of National Guard troops to Washington, D.C.

U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb on Thursday ruled that the deployment illegally intrudes on local officials' authority to direct law enforcement, the Associated Press reported.

The order was put on hold for 21 days to allow the government time to appeal the decision.

The lawsuit was brought by D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb in September, who alleged the deployment amounted to an illegal use of the military for domestic law enforcement, according to a previous AP report.

Earlier this month, the deployment, known as the DC Safe and Beautiful initiative, was extended through at least Feb. 28. The original order was issued Aug. 11.
