CLEVELAND — Cleveland officials say illegal parking, especially happening downtown and in Ohio City, is creating safety hazards and slowing traffic.

Now, the city is proposing a new camera enforcement system aimed at catching drivers who block crosswalks, double-park, or stop in intersections.

“The goal of the camera enforcement system is for illegal parking activity — double parking, parking in crosswalks, parking in intersections,” said Matt Moss, the city of Cleveland's senior strategist for thriving communities.

Although Cleveland is currently barred from using traffic cameras for speeding or red-light enforcement, city officials say this proposal is allowed because the statewide ban only applies to moving violations. Parking violations fall into a different category.
