The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation (SVBF) announced Wednesday that it has permanently preserved 165 acres of core battlefield from the Civil War's Second Battle of Winchester, according to an SVBF press release.

This site was previously occupied by the Yonley family, and is also known as the Yonley Farm. The land is where Confederate Gen. Jubal Early stormed Federal troop positions during the battle in June 1863, and where Confederate Gen. Richard Ewell launched a surprise attack.

The land will now be preserved and will be a new section of the Second Winchester Battlefield that will be open to the public as part of SVBF's Tourism Infrastructure Plan.

SVBF CEO Keven Walker said he is thrilled about the new addition to the foundation's preservation efforts.
