Three businessmen were sentenced to one year in federal prison Thursday for their roles in cheating Michigan taxpayers out of what a prosecutor called "a staggering amount of money."
The business executives from road contractor Surveying Solutions Inc. in Standish were sentenced after reaching a deal with federal prosecutors. The deal involved paying $15.6 million to the Michigan Department of Transportation and the federal government as part of a non-prosecution agreement that will keep the firm and its approximately 120 employees in business and eligible to obtain government contracts.
