A Liberal Senator has called for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to replace "part-time energy minister" Chris Bowen as he prepares to lead negotiations at next year's climate summit.

Mr Bowen confirmed on Thursday Adelaide would not holding COP31 in 2026 and that it would go to Turkey instead.

But the Energy Minister is attempting to secure a plush role for himself as COP President for Negotiations as part of negotiations.

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley said Australians deserved an energy minister who had more focus on domestic issues rather than "globetrotting" around the world.
