Independent MP Zali Steggall warns the Albanese government risks creating “a complete false equivalence” if it caves to the Coalition on Labor's long-awaited nature laws.

The Coalition is pressuring Labor to accept industry-backed amendments in return for helping to pass the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act through the Senate next week.

The offer of support is on the condition that Labor agrees to strip back key environmental safeguards and scale down the powers of its proposed national environment protection agency.

Speaking to Sky News First Edition host Pete Stefanovic, Ms Steggall said it was worrying the government was willing to compromise core protections in the act to secure support before parliament rises for the year.
