LOWER BRULE, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - The close-knit community of Lower Brule wants to know what happened to one of their own, and is asking for answers from the Bureau of Indian Affairs as they honor a young man laid to rest last summer.

One of the things that’s happening, a lot of questions about a man named Vince, who was taken into custody by the BIA and died.

From the youngest family members to the Tribal Chairman comes an outcry for answers in the death of Vincent Battese last July, following his arrest.

“Tell what part of the family one thing and another thing, but they don’t tell everybody the whole thing,” said Lower Brule Sioux Tribe Chairman Boyd Gourneau.

Battese grew up in Lower Brule with family and friends all around, like his cousin Stephen.
