The man charged recently with the 1998 murder of his girlfriend in Strasburg remains free on bond despite efforts by prosecutors to keep him in jail.
Daniel Edward Pompell, 56, of Culpeper, is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Sylena Dalton on July 27, 1998. Dalton and Pompell’s daughter, Allyson Dalton, then 10 weeks old, also disappeared at that time and has not been located since the incident.
Virginia State Police arrested Pompell on Sept. 26 and he remained in custody, held without bond, at the Rappahannock-Shenandoah-Warren Regional Jail.
