NEW CENTURY, Kan. —
A commercial building fire in New Century led to a hazardous materials response and a temporary shelter-in-place order Thursday evening.
The fire was reported just after 5 p.m. in the 300 block of Prairie Village Drive after crews were dispatched for an automatic alarm. Advertisement
When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from the building and upgraded the call to a structure fire.
After the fire was extinguished, crews identified hazardous materials inside, triggering a hazmat response.
Captain Matt Gillotti, the Johnson County District 1's public information officer, said the shelter-in-place order affects parts of New Century and Gardner.
