LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Health professionals are monitoring a new flu virus variant circulating internationally that could potentially reach the United States as the 2024-25 flu season approaches.

Baptist Health Richmond officials said they saw an unprecedented number of flu hospitalizations last year. This year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention projects a moderate flu season.

“They do predict that the combined peak hospitalizations for flu, COVID-19 and RSV might be similar to last season,” said Morgan Swiney, pharmacy operations manager at Baptist Health Richmond.

Peak Season Approaches

Swiney said peak flu season typically runs from November to March. While flu cases are not currently high, health officials are seeing early warning signs.
