WACO, Texas — A growing equine herpes outbreak tied to a recent event in Waco is raising concern among veterinarians and horse owners across the state.

The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has confirmed four cases of Equine Herpesvirus-1, or EHV-1. Four horses tested positive for the neurological form of the virus, known as equine herpes myeloencephalopathy, which is considered the most severe.

“We have four confirmed cases at this point,” said Dr. T.R. Lansford, Deputy Executive Director and Assistant State Veterinarian with TAHC. “That means we have horses that have clinical signs plus lab testing to support that they were infected or are infected with equine herpesvirus-1.”
