A Camden County man who ran a hotel-flipping scheme that secured more than $35 million in small-business loans was sentenced to seven years in prison and ordered to pay over $6 million in restitution, federal prosecutors said.
Mehul Ramesh Khatiwala, 43, of Voorhees, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud in April and was sentenced on Oct. 16.
Khatiwala owned Delaware Hotel Group and operated several other hotel management and loan brokerage companies in Mount Laurel, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said Khatiwala and several associates who ran loan brokerage and title and escrow firms devised a scheme to obtain Small Business Administration loans under the guise of buying hotels, then flipped the properties for profit.
