Albuquerque police have arrested two suspects , James Lucero and Abel Baca, in connection with the theft of wheelchairs from Carrie Tingley Hospital in March, while a third suspect, Jessica Chavez, remains at large.

The stolen wheelchairs, which are thousands of dollars each, are essential for adaptive sports teams, and their absence has prevented kids from practicing for months.

"We had 17 wheelchairs stolen," Executive Director of the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation Liliana Prado-Bujanda told KOAT.

The foundation had to suspend all wheelchair basketball programming from March until the end of August. Although insurance claims were filed for the specialty chairs, they were only able to replace half of what was stolen.
