Strong tremors were felt across Kolkata and several adjoining districts on Friday morning after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh at approximately 10:10 AM (IST).
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake originated near Dhaka, sending mild to moderate shocks across parts of eastern India.
Residents across Kolkata reported experiencing noticeable shaking in homes, offices, and high-rise buildings. Tremors were also reported from neighbouring cities including Guwahati, Agartala, and Shillong.
As of now, no casualties or significant damage have been reported. Local authorities are monitoring the situation, and emergency teams are on standby should any aftershocks occur.
