Unexpected rise in energy bills announced by Ofgem View Image

The energy price cap will rise by 0.2% from January 1 for a typical household in England, Scotland and Wales, Ofgem has said - having been expected to drop by one per cent. The move means your gas and electricity bills will go up again at the start of 2026.

Experts at Cornwall Insight expected Ofgem’s price cap to drop by 1% because of lower wholesale energy prices. That would have resulted in a £22 decrease to an average bill of £1,733 a year for a typical household from January 1.
