HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Honolulu City Council committee has recommended that the city settle a lawsuit brought by the family of Iremamber Sykap, who died after a police pursuit.
Such pursuits will soon have to follow guidelines spelled out by the state legislature.
The shooting happened in April 2021. Sykap, 16, was shot and killed after leading officers on a chase in a stolen car.
“I believe that the police officers were working to protect the public and withing their scope of duties,” city council chair Tommy Waters said at the council’s International and Legal Affairs Committee meeting Wednesday.
Waters was among three committee members who voted “yes with reservations” to approve a settlement with Sykap’s family in a lawsuit against the city.
