A powerful earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck central Bangladesh on Friday, resulting in at least six fatalities and numerous injuries. The quake, which occurred at 10:38 am, had its epicentre in the Ghorashal area of Narsingdi district, approximately 25 kilometres from Dhaka, at a depth of 10 kilometres. The tremors were felt widely across Dhaka and even reached parts of India, including Kolkata.
Reports indicate that the earthquake caused significant panic among residents in Dhaka, one of the world's most densely populated cities. Eyewitness accounts describe people fleeing buildings as they shook. Tragically, six individuals lost their lives in the capital, with three victims killed when a roof and wall collapsed, while the others were pedestrians struck by falling debris.
The US Geological Survey confirmed the earthquake's occurrence, and local media reported that the tremors were felt in various regions, including Barisal and Comilla. In Kolkata, residents experienced mild to moderate shaking, prompting many to evacuate buildings, particularly in high-rise areas. Reports from Kolkata noted that the tremors lasted between three to ten seconds, causing alarm among the populace.
Emergency teams in Dhaka are currently assessing the damage and monitoring for aftershocks. Bangladesh is situated at the convergence of the Indian, Eurasian, and Burma tectonic plates, making it susceptible to seismic activity. Although the central region is less prone to earthquakes compared to the north and southeast, the country is intersected by several major fault lines, placing it within 13 recognised earthquake-prone zones.
Visuals from Dhaka show emergency responders attending to the aftermath of the quake, as authorities continue to evaluate the situation. Last month, a smaller earthquake of magnitude 3.4 was recorded in the country, highlighting the ongoing seismic risks in the region.
As the situation develops, officials are urging residents to remain cautious and prepared for potential aftershocks.
