Hawaii Energy, the state’s energy conservation program, has launched its Appliance Trade-Up Program on Hawaii Island, offering residents in Hilo and Ka‘u the opportunity to exchange their old refrigerators or freezers for new, energy-efficient Energy Star models for as low as $250.
According to Hawaii Energy, the initiative is designed to help residents — especially those with the highest energy burdens — lower their electricity bills and reduce energy use by replacing older, inefficient appliances that consume nearly twice as much power as newer models.
Hilo residents can exchange their appliances at Ka Umeke Kaeo Charter School, located at 113 Kuawa Street. The application period for Hilo participants is open until Nov. 30, Hawaii Energy said.
In Ka‘u, residents will be able to trade
