After an intense wave arrests and raids by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is warning residents about an increased number of immigration scams. U.S. Border Patrol officers have ended their operation in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden announced in a Nov. 20 news release.
Scammers have posed as immigration attorneys or government officials and often offer legal support in exchange for large up-front payments, Jackson's office said in a Nov. 19 news release. Some may stage fake video calls or use artificial intelligence to "impersonate reputable lawyers."
