They say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." And that rings true with theAngel Light Academy, whose format has not changed since the organization began. Founded in 1995 by Julia Wilmot and the late Gen. Richard Wilmot, the nonprofit began by helping children of farm workers and individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder reclaim their lives through leadership training.

Each year, ALA honors outstanding community leaders with its Above & Beyond Desert Gala. At this year's sold-out event, held Oct. 19 at the Classic Club in Palm Desert and hosted by Gino LaMont, guests enjoyed dinner, watched videos of deserving local community leaders and heard inspiring speeches from the honorees.
