An Indian fighter jet crashed during the Dubai Airshow on Friday, resulting in the death of its pilot. The Indian Air Force (IAF) confirmed the incident, stating that the Tejas aircraft was involved in an aerial display when it lost control and crashed around 2:10 p.m. local time at Al Maktoum International Airport.

The IAF reported that the pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident. In a statement, the IAF expressed deep regret over the loss of life and extended condolences to the bereaved family. The statement also mentioned that a court of inquiry will be established to investigate the cause of the crash.

Witnesses reported seeing the single-seater jet dive toward the ground before it crashed, sending up large plumes of black smoke. The crash occurred in front of a crowd of spectators, prompting emergency sirens to sound at the airfield.

This incident marks the second crash of a Tejas aircraft in less than two years. The first occurred in March 2022 in Rajasthan, India, where the pilot successfully ejected before the crash. The Tejas, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, is a lightweight, single-engine fighter jet designed to enhance India's air defense capabilities amid growing military tensions in the region, particularly with China and Pakistan.

In September, India's Defense Ministry signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to procure 97 Tejas jets, with deliveries expected to start in 2027. Additionally, a deal for 83 Tejas aircraft was signed in 2021, but deliveries have faced delays due to engine shortages from the United States. The Dubai Airshow is a significant event in the aviation industry, showcasing major aircraft orders and advancements in aerospace technology.
