SCOTTISH Government officials warned John Swinney against raising human rights abuses in the US with Donald Trump , documents have revealed.

The First Minister met with the US President at his gold resort in Menie, Aberdeenshire, in July, when Trump was opening a new course.

Briefing documents published by the Scottish Government under Freedom of Information (FOI) laws have now revealed that a human rights group's request that Swinney raise a number of issues with Trump were rejected by officials.

Amnesty International and other human rights organisations had written to Swinney with a number of “asks” ahead of his meeting with Trump.
