Fans of Christmas markets thought they were in for a treat, but it was too good to be true. When posts on social media advertised a picture-perfect festive offering at Buckingham Palace , tourists flocked to the historic royal residence - only to realise they had been duped by AI images.

The AI-generated photos saw snow-covered stalls filling the space in front of the palace behind the gates, and stunning, twinkling fairy lights suspended above them in what looks like a festive paradise. But if you look closely, you can see the light display is actually hanging in mid-air.
