Thom Ward chose to privately lay a different wreath elsewhere after the Melbourne branch didn't allow him to partake in the service.

A Royal Air Force veteran has hit out at his local branch of the Royal British Legion after they barred him from laying a Remembrance Day wreath.

Thom Ward, who served 10 years in the RAF, said he was contacted by the branch committee of Melbourne Royal British Legion ahead of this year's Remembrance Day service, who had asked him to represent them by laying the Royal Air Force wreath.

"The night before the service, I then got a message saying they were standing me down because it would cause a lot of ill feeling if I were to lay the wreath," he said.
