The years from 1842 up to the 1880s in Belleville when the Moodie family lived here were a stirring time, marred by strong to violent hatreds between the Conservative and Reform parties, politically and, to a lesser extent between Catholic and Protestant faiths.
The topic was featured in presentations by two speakers at the monthly public presentation at the Hastings County Historical Society Tuesday evening. The speakers were Gary Nichol, president of the society and Richard Hughes, past president.

Nichol explained that the society was involved with the current Arts Festival launched by the Quinte Arts Council and had successfully lobbied for it to focus on the Susanna Moodie years, when she and her husband, John Dunbar Moodie and family lived in Belleville.
