Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa, to participate in the G20 Leaders' Summit, marking the first time this summit is being held on the African continent. Upon his arrival at Waterkloof Air Force Base, he received a ceremonial welcome, including a red-carpet salute from the South African Air Force. Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, South Africa's Minister in the Presidency, was present to greet him, along with a cultural group performing traditional dances and songs.
In a social media post, PM Modi expressed his anticipation for "productive discussions" with global leaders on significant issues. He stated, "Landed in Johannesburg for the G20 Summit related engagements. Look forward to productive discussions with world leaders on key global issues." The summit will focus on enhancing cooperation, advancing development priorities, and ensuring a better future for all.
During his visit, Modi met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who extended condolences for the recent tragedies in Delhi and Saudi Arabia that claimed several Indian lives. Modi also interacted with local children who welcomed him with prayers and Vedic mantras, showcasing the cultural ties between India and South Africa.
The Prime Minister highlighted the strong bond between the two nations, saying, "Deeply touched by the warm welcome from the Indian community in Johannesburg. This affection reflects the enduring bond between India and South Africa. These ties, rooted in history and strengthened by shared values, continue to grow even stronger!"
Modi is set to participate in all three sessions of the G20 Summit, which will cover topics such as inclusive economic growth, disaster risk reduction, climate change, and the role of artificial intelligence. He will also attend the sixth IBSA Summit, a trilateral forum involving India, Brazil, and South Africa.
The G20 Summit's theme this year is "Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability," continuing the discussions from previous summits held in New Delhi and Rio de Janeiro. Notably, the African Union became a member of the G20 during India's presidency in 2023. US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will not be attending this summit.
