PORT NECHES, Texas — Port Neches police are investigating after a 68-year-old man was found dead in a Drainage District 7 canal behind his home Friday morning in what a justice of the peace believes was an accidental drowning.

Around 11:30 a.m., dispatch received a call in reference to a body found in a canal that runs parallel to Saba Lane, according to Police Chief Cheri Griffith. The canal is perpendicular to Twin City Highway.

A person visiting the man's neighbor noticed him in the water and called police, according to Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett.

The Port Neches Fire Department assisted with the recovery of the body and JP Burnett responded to the scene.

Witnesses said the man frequently went to the water behind his home on Saba Lane, according to JP Burnett.
