Teenager Samuel Bird was last seen alive on June 1. After an exhaustive search that involved family, Indigenous groups and the Edmonton Police Service, the boy’s remains were found near the end of October in a rural area outside of Edmonton.

On Thursday, the Edmonton Police Commission saluted the officers and staff who worked on the case, which led to a second-degree murder charge of a 38-year-old Edmonton man.

It was a search that earned national attention, and put the relationship between police and Indigenous groups under the microscope. More than 100 Edmonton Police Service worked on the case. The Commission saluted the investigators, uncluding Staff Sgt. Andrew Larson, who coordinated the team, and lead detective Jared Buhler.
