Four people are dead, including a baby boy and his older brother, in what police are calling an apparent murder-suicide ambush at a northern Ohio home.
According to information from the Tiffin Police Department, the attack took place after a man ambushed his wife as she tried to move out of her home, then fatally shot her children − a 7-month-old baby and a 7-year-old boy − as well as another man before reportedly turning the gun on himself.
Police said the shooting took place around 6:25 p.m. Wednesday on the 100 block of Huss Street in the city of Tiffin, located along the Sandusky River in Seneca County.
According to a news release from police, officers responded to a report of gunshots and people screaming at the family's home and found four people fatally wounded.
Baby, 7-year-old boy, dad found suffering from 'apparent gunshot wounds'
Arriving officers, police said, entered the house and found a man and two male children suffering from "apparent gunshot wounds." They also located a woman "physically uninjured but clearly in state of shock, overwhelmed and visibly traumatized."
The man, who police identified as 29-year-old Dustin Willey, and one of the children, police reported, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Tiffin Fire & Rescue Division transported the second child and his mother to Mercy Hospital, where police said he later died.
Outside the residence, the release continues, officers found another man dead from "what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Based on the evidence collected thus far, the incident is being investigated by the Tiffin Police Department as a homicide/suicide."
Police identified that man as Ryan Eagon, 42, the husband of the woman found inside the home as well as the father of the 7-month-old baby.
USA TODAY has reached out to the victims' family for comment. USA TODAY could not immediately reach Eagon's relatives.
Ryan Eagon found in driveway near 7-year-old victim
According to an updated release from police, detectives determined the attack took place during "an effort by the mother of two children to remove belongings from the residence" following reported ongoing domestic issues in the home.
Arrangements had been made with Willey, the father of the woman's oldest child, to assist her in moving out while her husband, Eagon, was believed to be working out of town.
Evidence shows the mother and Willey were inside the home "gathering remaining items" while the children were outside near a vehicle.
"After hearing the 7-year-old cry out, they went to check on him and observed Ryan Eagon in the driveway," police wrote in the release.
Eagon immediately chased Willey, the release continues, "pushing past the mother and firing multiple shots." Eagon then "turned the gun on the children, fatally shooting both before directing additional gunfire at (Willey)... Eagon subsequently took his own life with a single gunshot wound."
The mother told police she then carried the injured children back inside the home before dialing 911.
'Horrific and heartbreaking'
The city's police chief, David Pauly, released a statement following the shooting asking the public to pray for the victims and first-responders as they process the tragedy.
"As a community, we are not accustomed to events of this horrific and heartbreaking nature in Tiffin," Pauly wrote. "I ask that all residents keep the victims’ families in their thoughts as they face unimaginable loss."
The case remained under investigation on Friday, police said.
