Sen. Chris Murphy warned that President Donald Trump’s comments suggesting Democratic lawmakers could be hanged for “seditious behavior” have put people's lives in danger. The Connecticut Democrat said it is time to “pick a f--king side.”
“This is not normal. We cannot allow this to feel normal,” the Murphy said in a video posted to X. “Every Democratic member of the Senate and the House … their life is in jeopardy.”
Trump’s posts came after six Democratic lawmakers — all veterans or former national security officials — released a video urging military members to “refuse illegal orders.” On Truth Social, Trump wrote, “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR. Punishable by DEATH!” He also reposted a message saying “HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD!!”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Trump was not calling for the deaths of Democrats and instead framed their comments as attempting to undermine America’s military order.
“The sanctity of our military rests on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is broken, it can lead to people getting killed," she said. "It can lead to chaos."
The Uniform Code of Military Justice requires all service members to obey "all lawful orders." Commands to commit crimes, violate the law, the Constitution, or an international treaty are considered unlawful and should not be followed, according to ABC News.
Trump clarified his comments on Friday, saying on Fox News Radio’s "Brian Kilmeade Show," that he was "not threatening them, but I think they’re in serious trouble."
Trump continued to assert that Democrats "broke the law."
Murphy said Trump’s language went far beyond partisan politics.
"The president of the United States just called for members of Congress to be executed," said Murphy. "If you are a person of influence in this country, maybe it's time to pick a f--king side."
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson called the Democrats' comments “wildly inappropriate,” but he broke with the president on what should be done.
“Obviously, I don’t think that ... these are crimes punishable by death or any of that,” Johnson said, according to Politico. “But the point we need to emphasize here is that members of Congress in the Senate and House should not be telling troops to disobey orders. It is dangerous.”
