"The 74th Miss Universe is.... Mexico!"

The crowd erupted with cheers and Fátima Bosch Fernández wiped away tears as she was crowned Miss Universe 2025 on Friday in Bangkok.

It was a dramatic victory for Bosch, 25, in a pageant plagued by controversy and chaos — perhaps even more so than usual.

Mishaps and controversies are not rare for the popular beauty pageant. In its 74 years of existence, the Miss Universe pageant has come under fire for stripping contestants of their titles over being married or pregnant , for cutting ties over racist remarks , for accidentally crowning the wrong winner (oh, Steve Harvey!), for allegations of bullying, and over global politics , just to name a few examples.

Never mind the ongoing debate over whether beauty pageants are archaic
