A project to expand U.S. 56 to a four-lane roadway from the east city limits of Great Bend to the K-156 junction is in the works. The Barton County Commission will be asked to approve an agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation on future maintenance responsibilities and more when the commission meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the courthouse. The Commission will also consider an engineering firm to hire after County Engineer Barry McManaman retires. When McManaman announced he was retiring earlier this year, that led the county to seek applicants for that position and to release a request for qualifications for an engineering firm.
