TUCSON, Ariz. — The former CEO of a health care provider for the White Mountain Apache Tribe has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for an embezzlement scheme, officials say.

Kevin McKenzie, 49, of Tucson was ordered to pay $33 million in restitution when he was sentenced on Oct. 16 in federal court after pleading guilty to embezzlement and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office of Arizona.

The defendant had served as COO and then CEO of Apache Behavioral Health Services, an agency tasked with providing services to members of the White Mountain Apache Tribe in eastern Arizona.

Between 2015 and 2023, McKenzie reportedly used two contracts to funnel money from ABHS to himself. Prosecutors said McKenzie went to extensive efforts to conceal the scheme b
