ROCKFORD, Ill (WREX) — As Thanksgiving approaches, the Rockford Fire Department has crucial safety tips for residents. Michael Schnapper, an arson investigator at the Rockford Fire Department emphasized the importance of not leaving cooking unattended, as cooking issues cause 50% of residential fires.
Officials advised that holiday cooks should set timers and keep an eye on their cooking. Schnapper also warned against deep frying frozen turkeys, which can explode, and recommended to make sure the meat is completely thawed when cooking outdoors with at least 10 feet of clearance from combustible materials.
For any relatives who may be smokers, Schnapper stressed proper disposal of cigarette butts, especially in dry or windy conditions, to prevent fires.
