DES MOINES, Iowa —
The Des Moines man convicted of shooting his ex-girlfriend's parents will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Hamza Smajlovic , 25, admitted to killing Ruth Robison, 45, of Urbandale, and critically injuring Tony Robison on Nov. 1, 2024. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and attempted murder last month, the day his trial was scheduled to start.
Authorities say in October 2024 Smajlovic choked the Robison's 24-year-old daughter in the home they shared at Northwest 51st Place in Des Moines. It was the "final straw" after years of abuse, the woman said in a victim impact statement Friday during Smajlovic's sentencing.
Smajlovic carried out the shooting of the Robisons while they were helping their daughter move out.
