The province’s police watchdog has concluded that Gananoque Police Service officers did not commit any criminal offence during a confrontation with a man in crisis in August.

According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), officers were dispatched to a local residence on the afternoon of Aug. 15 after receiving a report of a disturbance. When they arrived, officers saw a 42-year-old man through a broken front window and attempted to calm him. The SIU said the man appeared to be in a mental-health crisis, told officers they would “have to kill him,” and displayed a knife.

Gananoque police requested assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police as negotiations continued unsuccessfully. As the situation escalated, officers decided to enter the home.
