The Virginia Tech Hokies made the pertinent decision to jump off the coaching carousel as early as possible, hiring former Penn State Nittany Lions coach James Franklin.
This was the expected landing spot for Franklin, who spent 12 years at Penn State, going 104-45 with the Nittany Lions. Franklin replaces Brent Pry at Virginia Tech, who was fired earlier this season after an 0-3 start to the year.
Just a few days after his hiring, contract details are starting to emerge for Franklin. According to the university, Franklin’s deal is a five-year agreement, and his total compensation from Virginia Tech during the length of this deal is $41,750,000.
Of course, Franklin also has his buyout from Penn State after getting fired, where he was originally due $49 million. However, Franklin reportedly negotiated his buyout down and is now owed just $9 million by his former school.
Under the terms of his contract, Franklin's buyout was to be paid in installments through 2031, and it would have been significantly offset if he chose to take another job.
