Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine was closed Friday while a historic ordnance item was removed from the park.
On Nov. 21 around noon, National Park Service preservationists discovered evidence of a buried historic ordnance.
Per standard protocol, the park was cleared immediately and then closed to ensure the safety of visitors and staff.
The Baltimore City Fire Department said that “during construction, crews unearthed an old cannonball.”
Officials said this was considered an “unexploded ordnance” and required precautionary measures, including the bomb squad and a medic unit on standby.
