WASHINGTON, D.C. ( 25News Now ) - Illinois Republican Congressman Darin LaHood is celebrating a major step to reform the foster care system .
LaHood, who chairs the Work and Welfare Committee, teamed up with First Lady Melania Trump on a new executive order.
Signed by the president last Friday, the Fostering the Future for American Children and Families Act provides $25 million to modernize the system.
The money will expand access to education, career development, housing, and digital resources for young people aging out of foster care. Relevant departments will have six months to develop plans and strategies to support this initiative.
LaHood said stable housing is crucial, as foster youth often face higher rates of homelessness and school dropout.
