The Windsor Police Service is asking the city for a budget increase of just over four per cent next year, even as the city is looking to keep costs flat.

The police service board passed the force's 2026 budget on Friday, but it still needs approval by city council.

"Operating and capital comes it at $122 million dollars," said Coun. Jo-Anne Gignac, who chairs the board. "That's what it costs to keep our community safe."

Much of that increase, Gignac said, is because of rising costs over which the board has no control, like increases in contracts and collective agreements. That represents about $2.2 million in additional money.

The police service is also planning for an extra million in overtime
