Springfield led Chester, 20-6, at halftime in Friday’s District 1 Class 5A final behind two first-half touchdowns from Luke Valerio.
Valerio ran for a 3-yard score in the first quarter and a 1-yarder in the second to build a 13-0 lead. Chester got within 13-6 on a 31-yard connection between Jalen Harris and Daron Harris.
Springfield went up 20-6 on an 8-yard touchdown pass from John Hopkins.
The yardage totals were even in the first half, a 164-163 edge for the Clippers. But Springfield intercepted Jalen Harris twice, including on the final play of the first half. Finn Delaney ended the first series with an interception, giving Springfield a short field.
Jalen Harris was 8-for-14 for 109 yards in the first half.
Springfield had an even split, 84 yards on the ground and 79 from Hopkins
