Republican Representative Elise Stefanik of New York doubled down Friday on her claim that New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is a “jihadist,” saying that while she wants the city to succeed, she and President Donald Trump “will have to agree to disagree.”

Newsweek reached out to Mamdani's team by email on Friday evening outside of normal business hours for comment.

Why It Matters

Stefanik last month declared her campaign for governor of New York, setting her up to face off with Democrat and current Governor Kathy Hochul as the field remains otherwise largely clear of any competition. Most polls show Hochul leading in any head-to-head, but a recent Manhattan Institute survey found Stefanik with an advantage.
