It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a new record price for a comic book – with an unusual backstory.

A “Superman #1” comic book from 1939 sold for $9.12 million on Thursday in an auction from Heritage Auctions. The relic was discovered by three brothers while cleaning out their late mother’s attic at her home in San Francisco, California, according to the auction page .

“It wasn’t like we said, ‘Let’s go find that comic book,’” the youngest brother, 57, who preferred to remain anonymous, told The Hollywood Reporter . “It was more, ‘Let’s get that dumpster and just fill it up.’”

The previous record price for a comic book was $6 million for a signed copy of “Actions Comics” sold by Heritage in 2024.

The full color, 64-page book from DC Comics was graded as a 9.0 on a 10-point scale by CG
