In the name of saving $56 million a year, the U.S. Department of the Treasury has stopped making pennies. Many articles and editorials have been written about this, so far I have yet to read that anyone thinks this is a good idea.
Our U.S. annual budget is approximately $7 trillion. If my math is correct, by discontinuing the penny, we plan to save about 0.0008% of that annual budget.
Many feel that the government is wasteful both domestically and abroad on a large scale. For a change, how about wasting a few dollars on something that most constituents actually want, the penny.
