Who is Mamdani?
Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist state lawmaker from Queens, is the first Muslim and the first South Asian to lead the city, and the first immigrant mayor in 80 years.
The mayor-elect beat out independent candidate and former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who resigned in 2021 after 10 years as the state's governor while facing sexual harassment allegations, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
