India witnessed a major shift in its labour rules on Friday as the government officially brought four new labour codes into effect , replacing 29 older laws.
This is the first time since Independence that such a large reform in labour regulation has been carried out at once, and many employees are now asking one question: will their salary change?
The new Codes on Wages, Industrial Relations, Social Security, and Occupational Safety and Health are now active. Together, they simplify several scattered laws and aim to create one clear system for employers and workers.
Many of the laws that existed earlier were written decades ago and did not match the way India works today, especially with the rise of gig workers, platform jobs, fixed-term contracts, and increased formalisation.
