PERTH — England crumbled to defeat on just Day Two of the opening Test of the Ashes after Travis Head’s century defied all that had gone before him.

After skittling Australia out for 132 in their first innings, England were then looking to build a lead on the second day in Perth.

England were even 99 runs ahead and just one wicket down at lunch, but a collapse of 6-39 then saw the visitors all out for 164.

Chasing 205 for victory, Head then hit a 69-ball century and was eventually dismissed for 123 to put Australia on the brink of the win.

And it was then stand-in captain Steve Smith who finished it off, claiming the single that will leave England reeling and asking themselves plenty of questions before the second Test of the series.
