THE STATE’S TWO U.S. House members fell in line with their superiors to oppose the deal to the end the federal government shutdown, but this past week they broke with leadership when it came to disciplining a colleague.
The question at hand was what to do with U.S. Rep. Jesus Chuy Garcia , D-Ill., who apparently maneuvered to choose his successor by announcing just before the filing deadline that he wasn’t running for reelection.
The move earlier this month meant the nomination would go to Patty Garcia (no relation), his longtime chief of staff, because she had been the only one who had already signed up to run.
The House voted 236-186 to adopt a resolution reprimanding Garcia, who had Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in strong opposition to the idea.
