Star Australia batter Travis Head has revealed that it was a decision taken by regular skipper Pat Cummins, stand-in captain Steve Smith and coach Andrew McDonald to send him to open with Jake Weatherald, a masterstroke that gave Head ample time to settle down and smash England to take his team to an eight-wicket win.

A casual suggestion in Australia’s dressing room became one of the boldest and most inspired Ashes decisions in years, elevating Head to open in place of the injured Usman Khawaja.

Just hours later, it delivered a 69-ball hundred, an eight-wicket victory over England and a dramatic swing in the opening Test of the 2025 series.
